What we are about to share with you is absolutely fundamental to any conversation that you will have anywhere, with anyone. These five conversation starter principles were highlighted in Don Gabor’s book: How To Start A Conversation And Make Friends.

In any conversation, there is essentially one main path the conversation can follow, to be a “successful” conversation. There are five phases that a conversation must pass through, and these are:

#1 – Risk or Rejection – This is, for the most part, the initiation of a conversation. You are putting yourself out there, which is risky as far your brain is concerned, with the possibility of rejection by the other person.

#2 – Ritual Questions – This is the standard, generic (and typically boring for both people) way of pursuing a converation. Basic, non-risky questions are asked and answered; i.e. “where are you from?”, “where do you work?”, and so on…

#3 – Active Listening – This is where you listen attentively for small pieces of free information about the person.

#4 – Information Seeking – With the free information you gather, you then start asking questions, based on what you’ve just heard – trying to learn more about the person.

#5 – Self-disclosure – This is where you reveal your information to the other person. They will be listening to what you are saying, picking up on things, and in turn asking question based on what you have told them.
